The goal of this electric grill review is to help you find a perfect, money-saving alternative for the bestselling (but expensive) Cuisinart GR-150. In short, with dozens of top rated electric grills you can buy, which one is the best cheap alternative? The answer is called the Hamilton Beach MultiGrill. It's the best best small and portable electric grill we've tested and offers a great cooking experience plus a low price. In short, if you're looking for a cheap indoor grill that you can use for anything from eggs and pancakes for breakfast to steak and veggies for dinner, this grill is for you! Hungry yet? Let's take a look at how these two products compare.
The Cuisinart GR-150 is one of the top electric grills on the market. It's a bestselling product, but the Cuisinart brand name also means that you pay a big-brand price for this product. We'd therefore only recommend the GR-150 to people looking for dual-zone temperature control (meaning that you can set separate temperatures for each cooking area). It's an advanced feature that few people will actually need, but if you do then this grill is a good choice. Everybody else is well-advised to go with the fantastic and cheap Hamilton Beach.
Hamilton Beach's new MultiGrill is hands-down the best cheap electric grill we've tested. It offers virtually the same features as the expensive Cuisinart GR-150, but (you guessed it) comes at a very affordable price. So if you're looking for the best electric bbq grill for the money you've just found it. We highly recommend the grill since it's easy to use, cooks great food, and dishwasher safe. Best of all, with the Hamilton Beach you'll have plenty of money left over to buy bacon, steaks, veggies, and more and take your new grill for a test drive.
The Cuisinart GR-150 features reversible cooking plates. One side is designed as a grill with ridges; the other is flat for use as a griddle. This lets you grill all types of foods, from bacon to vegetables.
The Hamilton Beach MultiGrill also offers a combination of grill and griddle but goes about it in a different way. It's not reversible but instead, one side has grill ridges and the other is a flat griddle.
The GR-150 can be opened all the way to have a flat, double grilling surface. This works great for pancakes, bacon, and many other uses. What it also means is that you can easily double the surface.
The Hamilton Beach can also be opened flat, doubling the available grill area. This is an incredibly useful feature when you want to cook two separate foods (eggs and sausages, or shrimps and veggies).
When closed the Cuisinart's grilling surface measures about 120 square inches. Once you flip open, the grill this area is doubled to 240 square inches. Either way, that's a very large cooking area.
The Hamilton Beach's cooking surface measures a little over 100 inches while closed and 200 inches when the grill is opened flat. The latter is enough for six eggs and 15 sausages, all at once!
The Cuisinart GR-150's plates are fully dishwasher safe. This is essential because it makes cleaning up easy after all that grilling.
The Hamilton Beach MultiGrill's plates are also dishwasher safe. After each test wash they looked very clean, almost like new.
Few things are as frustrating as dirty, crusty grill plates. Luckily, the Cuisinart has non-stick plates that make it much easier for you to cook and flip food. They, of course, also make cleanup a snap.
The Hamilton Beach MultiGrill's cooking plates are also perfectly non-stick. It was easy to flip eggs and even pancake dough with little oil didn't stick. Cleanup is easy when plates are non-stick, too.
The Cuisinart's integrated drip tray is designed to catch oil, juices, and everything else. It's well-built and can be washed in your dishwasher. It catches liquids very well during normal cooking.
Hamilton Beach also offers an integrated drip tray. When you're done cooking, just pull it out and empty any oil and juices. Then simply stick the drip tray into the dishwasher and you're done.
The maximum heat setting on the GR-150's dial is 450° Fahrenheit, although the grill is advertised as being able to go to 500°. Either way, we found the grill to warm up quickly and product excellent, high heat when needed. This comes in handy when you're trying to sear steaks. The temperature setting is adjustable to "warm," 250°, 300°, 350°, 400°, and as mentioned 450°.
The Hamilton Beach grill has a maximum heat setting of 400° Fahrenheit. That's 50° lower than the Cuisinart but still plenty to sear food, char veggies, and much more. Additionally, you can adjust the grill's temperature much more gradually than the Cuisinart: The Hamilton Beach offers temperature settings of 250°, 275°, 300°, 325°, 350°, 375°, and 400°. This is great for precise cooking.
